Despite this trying time, Spring is here at last but chimneys need sweeping ...

This is a shout out to remind you that it is nearing the end of the heating season hopefully, summer is coming, and it's time to book your chimney sweep if you can.    It is so important to have this maintenance done as tar build up in your flue can cause chimney fires and insurance companies are very cute at not paying out.   It is possible that during the lockdown you will have had more fires than normal.   A registered sweep will also inspect your flue and make sure it's still connected in the right places and in good condition.   He will tell you if it isn't.

Now would normally be the time to start thinking about next winter's heating.  Once late August hits, things start to get busy and lead in times extend.    Presently, our factory is on shutdown with the staff on furlough.   But there are stocks of stoves in their storeroom which they managed to get finished before they had to stop, and staff working from home are able to take orders, and get them out via normal couriers.      We had a delivery this week, so it's possible to still order this Spring if you want to get ahead.   Please feel free to get in touch and we will try to help.

We can supply throughout France still with available stoves, deliveries are permissible.    More locally we can supply and install within an hour (+/-) radius of base.    Steve is also able to offer a plumbing service, being registered with CMA Orne and fully insured for decenelle for stove and flue installation and plumbing.      City and Guilds qualified since 1983 and registered in France since 2006.

Ban on wood burning fires

Many people may have seen the news that the UK government is going to ban the sale of coal and for now 'wet wood'  and the newscasters have started to warn that all wood burning fires may be a thing of the past due to the particulates that they emit.

The UK press also reports that only the most highly engineered and eco rated wood burning stoves will ultimately be  allowed to be sold in the UK.

Many stoves that are fabricated in China, which are the ones you mostly see in the the DIY shops will not be rated high enough to be sold in UK, who knows in France yet.

Woodwarm Stoves are highly engineered to be environmentally friendly and many of them are DEFRA approved for use in smokeless zones.

The most important thing here, is once again my mantra.... do NOT BURN WET WOOD!   The wood should be less than 20% moisture content.    Any wood burner burning wet wood will produce tar and noxious fumes and can cause a build up tar in your flue and block it,,,, a fire hazard.  There is no point in burning wet wood, it will not produce the heat that you need.

Steve is the agent for Woodwarm Stoves in France and can help you pick the best wood burning stove that suits your needs.   Fully registered and insured (decennel) in France as a Plumber and Heating Engineer he can supply and install your stove in a 1 hour radius of our base and can also quote on your plumbing needs.   We can also supply Woodwarm Stoves throughout France.

The Woodwarm Wildwood, CE approved range of stoves have been developed to be environmentally friendly, burning only wood as a totally sustainable fuel.   Wood fuel is carbon neutral.  It absorbs as much carbon in its growth as it releases when burnt.  Reducing carbon emissions helps the environment.   The WILDWOOD stove ranges from £1,176 for the baby 5KW to £2,024.40 for the whopping 20KW inclusive of VAT.  All come with a choice of base, in the picture below you can see the log store base.  All stoves are made to order at the base in Devon and finished to your specification, i.e. colour, bases and catches.

We can offer an installation service in our local area, if not we can help find a local installer

Steve offers a Plumbing and Heating Service including stove installations in West 61/South 14/East Manche  He is the agent in France for Woodwarm Stoves of Devon ....

... however this is general information on how to maintain a woodburner in winter no matter whose make.

  • Don't leave any stove slumbering for too long, give it a rev up once a day to avoid tar build up in the flue.  I do this every morning when making a cuppa, our Woodwarm Fireview doesn't go out overnight, so I just open the 'speed' (air)  control and get it going then pop another log on.

  • My normal mantra - don't burn wood that hasn't been seasoned.  Wood should have dried to at least 19% moisture content.    You can buy moisture testers from Amazon Sample of moisture testers on Amazon.

  • If your stove doesn't have a self-cleaning glass (like Woodwarm Stoves 😍) then do not use a scourer or anything abrasive as you will be left with a scratched glass which will attract more and more deposits and spoil your view.

  • We also recommend a stove or stove pipe thermometer to not exceed the most efficient operating temperature.  Over firing can cause serious damage to your stove, and waste money with the amount of wood you are burning.   These are also available on Amazon should you want one.

  • Don't forget that you need to have by French regulations  a smoke and carbon monoxide detector in your house no matter what stove you have.

Many of our customers have asked for prices to be displayed on our website.  As the range gets updated it's a tricky matter, so I'm going to pop them on the blog over the next few days with a summary of each range.

Fireview Range:  Joint Woodburning and/or multifuel Stoves.

The Fireview CE approved, multifuel range is designed to meet all your heating needs, with outputs ranging from 5kW up to 20kW to heat any size of room.

All these multifuel stoves can be used for Woodburning only, this is due to our riddling grates ability to form a true flat bed which allows a bed of ash to form.

Woodwarm Fireview stoves epitomise the design details of an efficient air washed clean burning stove. They are extremely easy to light and use.

They can be supplied in many forms and will be hand finished to your own specifications.   Designs include flat tops, profiled flat tops, straight sides or cinched-in sides.

Optional extras include brass catches, a small variety of colours, legs between 50mm to 150mm. Plus you can also set them on a pedestal or a plinth.

You can see the range of stoves and styles in our brochure.

New Year Resolutions for Wood Stove Owners or Potential Wood Stove Owners

No. 3
If you are thinking about buying a new stove, then select wisely.  There are many cheap stoves out there on the market which are no more than a metal box poorly put together and you will watch your money literally going up in smoke.  This is because the cheaper end of the market tends to be uncontrollable, so you will spend your days throwing log after log after log on the fire.

A well-engineered stove will sit all day and night on fewer logs, throw more heat into the room rather than up the chimney, and save you money in the long run.    Wood burners should have an upper air inlet that is controllable from open to almost fully shut.  Wood burns from the top, coal burns from the bottom.  Many cheaper stoves only have a  bottom air inlet which will mean you sit all night poking around pushing the ash around to open the air supply.

Remember that your insurance company will ask if your stove was installed by a qualified installer.  This is because the French regulations are quite strict and rightly so. A metre or two of pipe stuck into your chimney does not comply!    Check that they have the correct registration with your local Chambre de Metiers, (registered floor tilers do not qualify) and that they have the relevant professional insurance.

Yes, installing a flue is not an expensive business compared with rebuilding your dream home.

Steve offers a Plumbing and Heating Service in West 61/South 14/East Manche  He is also the agent for the manufacturer Woodwarm Stoves of Devon and we supply the whole of France with these super stoves.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS FOR WOOD BURNER OWNERS

Continuing your resolutions as wood burning stove owners

I will get my chimney swept at least once per year by a registered chimney sweep - remember your house insurance!

You should be getting your chimney swept at least once a year by a certificated chimney sweep. Most French insurers insist on this being done at least once per annum.  This is because, over time, soot and creosote will build up inside your wood burner flue (though you can limit this dramatically by only burning seasoned wood - see previous blog entry). Getting the chimney swept will reduce the risk of flammable creosote causing a chimney fire and also keep the stove system as efficient as possible.

We sell Woodwarm Stoves as agents for the 'mothership' company in Devon.

All Woodwarm stoves feature their advanced clean burn air wash system. After circulating the stove, pre-heated air flushes down the double glazed door, keeping the glass perfectly clean at all times - even at low temperatures. Superior clean burn efficiency means that not only is more heat achieved on less fuel, but combustion products in the flue are also reduced, causing fewer flue problems. Reduction in pollution combined with greater efficiency creates a really environmentally friendly stove.

For more information on these great stoves see our website where you can download a brochure.

Steve offers a Plumbing and Heating Service in 61/14/50 and upper 53   In a radius of 1 hour.    Please call for more information or email us - contact details on the website.

Happy New Year and Decade -

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR CLIENTS, EXISTING, NEW and FUTURE

(copyright FREEpik)

NEW YEAR RESOLUTION FOR OWNERS OF ALL WOODBURNERS

1.  I will only burn seasoned wood

We shouldn't have to keep saying it... but we have to.  Only burn well-seasoned wood.  These are logs that have been cut, chopped and left to dry for a prolonged period.  This will ensure a burn that is better for your bank balance, your wood burner, and the environment.  Burning logs with a high moisture content wasted energy that could be spent heating your room on evaporating water.  It creates more smoke and results with flammable gases escaping up the chimney before they have been burned, polluting the air and wastes the money you spend on the fuel. Unseasoned or green wood also deposit tar onto the chimney which can eventually block and catch.

Furthermore, we have heard of at least 2 house fires in English owned households in Normandy in 2019 where a) the chimney had not been installed properly according to French regulations and indeed common-sense rules, and b) where the wood burned on the wood burner was not seasoned.  DO NOT GET CAUGHT OUT.  An improperly installed wood burner can invalidate your house insurance, but I'll mention that again, and again and again......

As a rule of thumb here is a list of wood and burning attributes - but all have to be seasoned.   We now burn a mix of oak and other hardwood, but when we lived in Aude, in the middle of a chestnut forest we burned solely Sweet Chestnut which worked really well on our Fireview and indeed our Stanley woodburning cooker.
