NEW YEAR RESOLUTION FOR OWNERS OF ALL WOODBURNERS

1.  I will only burn seasoned wood

We shouldn't have to keep saying it... but we have to.  Only burn well-seasoned wood.  These are logs that have been cut, chopped and left to dry for a prolonged period.  This will ensure a burn that is better for your bank balance, your wood burner, and the environment.  Burning logs with a high moisture content wasted energy that could be spent heating your room on evaporating water.  It creates more smoke and results with flammable gases escaping up the chimney before they have been burned, polluting the air and wastes the money you spend on the fuel. Unseasoned or green wood also deposit tar onto the chimney which can eventually block and catch.

Furthermore, we have heard of at least 2 house fires in English owned households in Normandy in 2019 where a) the chimney had not been installed properly according to French regulations and indeed common-sense rules, and b) where the wood burned on the wood burner was not seasoned.  DO NOT GET CAUGHT OUT.  An improperly installed wood burner can invalidate your house insurance, but I'll mention that again, and again and again......

As a rule of thumb here is a list of wood and burning attributes - but all have to be seasoned.   We now burn a mix of oak and other hardwood, but when we lived in Aude, in the middle of a chestnut forest we burned solely Sweet Chestnut which worked really well on our Fireview and indeed our Stanley woodburning cooker.
